About the OSE Apprenticeship
The OSE Apprenticeship is a full-immersion, hands-on training program designed to develop morally intelligent, highly skilled generalists who can build the foundations of an open-source civilization.
We believe the future belongs to those who can collaborate across disciplines, wield tools with precision and purpose, and design systems that regenerate both people and the planet.
Our Mission
To train a new generation of Deep Generalists who are equipped to solve complex problems at scale — using open-source tools, ethical design, and cooperative methods — to build thriving communities and resilient infrastructure.
Why Deep Generalists?
Specialists solve narrow problems. Deep Generalists solve the systems around them.
In our apprenticeship, you’ll go beyond trade training. You’ll learn to build a house and a tractor — but also how to lead teams, design supply chains, run collaborative enterprises, and build open infrastructure that empowers entire communities.
Our Story
The Open Source Ecology project began with a vision: to open-source the 50 most important machines that it takes to build modern civilization — from tractors to CNC mills to brick presses.
The apprenticeship was born from our realization that tools alone aren’t enough — we need people with the mindset and skillset to build, adapt, and teach others. Since 2010, we’ve been training builders, engineers, farmers, designers, and visionaries to work together toward this shared mission.
What Makes This Different?
- We build real infrastructure — homes, machines, workshops — during the program
- We combine hands-on fabrication with systems thinking and moral leadership
- Everything we do is open source — no patents, no NDAs
- You leave with a portfolio, a tribe, and the skills to build your own civilization
